It really starts to look like Chris should finally move to an external hoster.

Perhaps the ISP shut him down because too many people wanted to download the 1.6.1 RC?
When I tried I had a DL rate of about 2kb/s, before giving up.

Right. Here is an relevant sniplet of what he wrote me yesterday:

"...I'm going to switch from DSL to cable internet. The speeds I'm getting are ridiculously slow: 1 megabit, even though I live 2km from the center of Seattle. My neighborhood has notoriously old telephone cables."

Yep. I get up to 1 minute before the board is loading. Often that goes beyond the time out response. :?

I had some mail exchange with Chris before he left for snowboarding over the past weekend (I suppose). He wrote to me on Monday of last week

Chris wrote:
I've upgraded my internet connection and am now getting over 5 Mbps upload speeds (instead of < 160 kbps). I haven't yet moved shatters.net over to the new connection, but will be doing so this week. There will be some DNS headaches during the process. I still regard this as a temporary fix until the time I find a new home for shatters.net.

I suppose some headache still remained before he left to the snow. He is back now and just wrote a mail to the developers list.

...and it is down again, for quite a while now...

(On an unrelated subject, anyone got celestia-qt to compile on Ubuntu 11.10?)

A couple of days ago, I communicated with ChrisL, who was still at ESTEC (ESA)/ Noordwijk, as usual around this time of the year. He was aware of the hanging shatters.net, yet was unable to "revitalize" it remotely. Today, he is on his way back and will take care of shatters.net tomorrow with highest priority...

Since I am running OpenSuSE, I can only state repeatedly that celestia-qt builds without any problems on my Linux installation with Qt-4.7.4 and qtcreator 2.3. It also builds with somewhat lower version numbers of the Qt-library.

Looks like 11.10 has changed the linker behaviour to pass --as-needed by default, which apparently puts stricter conditions on the ordering of various parts of the command lines. Don't know enough about automake, etc. to be able to fix this. Oh well.

Did you consider downgrading the autotools ? They're easy to restore, if things don't improve. Which versions does 11.10 use?

odd that it is not building on ubuntu 11.10
they must have moved over to gcc 4.6

on opensuse11.4
using qt-creator 4.7.1 and gcc 4.5
the *.pro builds
and so dose " ./configure --with-qt "

i run two a gtk and a qt
Code:
./configure --prefix=/usr/opt/QT_Celestia --with-lua --with-qt --with-cspice-dir=/DATA/cspice --program-prefix=QT

Yes Ubuntu 11.10 is on gcc-4.6 by default, which is incompatible with the version of Eigen we are using. I've got an update-alternatives set up to switch to gcc-4.5. The issue is when it gets to the linker, apparently they changed the default options for the ld command, and I ends up with a huge number of errors about various parts of qt being undefined.

Today the newly relocated and updated Celestia website is launched.
Thanks are due to Chris Laurel, who allowed to transfer website to a new URL. We have updated the top logo, documentation and downloads pages and we make the possibility of translating website into other languages. Today we are launching a new Celestia Forums! Unfortunately, the old forum database is lost, But, we managed to restore the forums structure, as well as several important messages, such as Celestia Users FAQ, Regulations and Tipps for Uploading Addons to the CelestiaMotherlode, Preliminary Scripting FAQ, and others. See: http://www.shatters.net/celestia
