A group of astrophysicists from the Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE)/Garching/Germany and from other institutes abroad, report the presence of a dense gas cloud, approximately three times the mass of Earth that is falling into the accretion zone of the super-massive Black Hole in our galactic center (Sgr A*).

This exciting discovery (only 27000 ly away) will allow to watch in real time how the cloud will be colliding with the gas arround the Black Hole! This will heat up the cloud from presently 280 degrees Centigrade to several million degrees, a shock front will build up and the whole system will be disrupted...

Over the past three years the cloud has already begun to disrupt, probably mainly through tidal shearing arising from the black hole’s gravitational force. The cloud’s dynamic
evolution and radiation in the next few years will probe the properties of the
accretion flow and the feeding processes of the super-massive black hole.
