Not sure what you are alluding to. The tiny text on the plot includes

Timeseries Chart between ....and...
and
LHC BOFSU RADIAL_LOOP_ERROR_01

How about Aliens ready to attack or perhaps new gravitational waves ? ;-)

It shows the effect on the LHC's beam due to one of the recent New Zealand earthquakes.

Fermilab has seen equivalent effects. For example, see http://www.quantumdiaries.org/2011/03/1 ... -emotions/

Thanks Selden,

I had missed that image. But otherwise, a "time series" just represents a series of measurements (no matter what) as function of time. So I suppose an electrical short cut down at LHC would have given a similar phenomenology. Of course the observed coincidence between Fermilab, CERN and possibly other labs points clearly to an event at much larger scale.

I thought you'd be mildly interested in that image Fridger.
Sorry for no description but assumed you'd recognise the cause of this sort of artifact.
Here: is the relevant webpage with more info

They say that this one released 12 quadrillion Joules of energy ... which is more than the sum-total of all other quakes in NZ over the last 6-7 years ... (including the Canterbury and Christchurch quakes of 2010/11).
This makes it ~ 1/16th the energy of Japan's March 2011 quake, which released 190 quadrillion Joules.

I'll try to post a few pics when I get time if anyone's interested. There's been some quite extraordinary changes to the landscape here...including an estimated 80,000 - 100,000 landslides (colloquially known as "slips" in NZ), and we now have significant quantities of new land (from seafloor uplift) .

Hi CC,

indeed my thoughts were a lot down under in NZ after you had these quakes again so close to the last devastating one with 185 people killed.

Yes, I am VERY much interested in that material. Actually, you perhaps remember that in 2011 I wrote here various scientific reports about measuring the propagation of radiation from the Fukushima disaster etc. This one for example
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=401
had 36855 reads! I still keep getting invitations to conferences about such topics ;-)

Yes please do so!!

Thanks,
Fridger

PS: Sorry for the current silence here as to more topics of public interest, but we have bundled all our free resources towards coding and researching new features for celestia.Sci...

An earthquake in New Zealand ( M 7.8 ) at 11:02 UTC on November 13th 2016 (12:02 local LHC time) is visible together with the earth tides on the mean LHC orbit (here expressed in relative energy change) during a very long fill with proton and lead ion beams.

2 videos at ground level on the coast road...
(Both videos contain some explicit language).

1. In the first video Asher Trafford filmed his drive along SH1 north of Parnassus, which shows just how damaged SH1 is after the Kaikoura quake:

Does anyone have a really plausible explanation of so-called "Earthquake Lights" that were also noted during the NZ quake??

I have read the Wiki article about them....

I haven't read the Wiki, but here's a few theories in our media:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sunday-star-times/latest-edition/latest-news/86420960/Earthquake-strange-glowing-in-the-sky-possibly-earthquake-lightning

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/nz-earthquake/86543315/how-a-te-papa-geologist-saw-the-earthquake

CC

PS.
Here's a map I constructed from GEONET data of all quakes of magnitude 5 or greater, and less than 50km depth, within approx. 1000km of Kaikoura since 01/01/1800, including the 8.2 magnitude Wairarapa quake of 23/01/1855.
(a total of 1269 events).

for the "lights"
other than the quartz in the granite compressing then uncompressing causing A LOT of static discharge in the thousands of megawatts range

more than a thunderstorm

and ionized O2 and CO2 and other gasses glow very nicely near a BIG Tesla coil

I'm sure that anyone who's taken a polyester jumper off in a dark room has seen and felt a little crackle and pop.
I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that rubbing 2000 sq.km + of rock together might just produce something similar.
