Hi folks!

Let me point you at this magnificent effect and tutorial from Scifi-Meshes.com member IRML:

I still have to figure out how to do this in Cinema4D - it's a Lightwave tutorial, but it's possible in most 3D apps.
That would be a nice add-on for celestia, wouldn't it? :D

Sometimes the forest gets lost in the trees. It would have been nice if the author of the tutorial had mentioned the underlying concept at the very beginning so one does not have to find out what it is by "decompiling" his instructions.

Essentially it is to represent a 3D object by stacking up many flat layers. Each layer is "cut" to match the outline of the 3D object at the height of that particular layer. One can imagine using this method to make 3D clouds within Celestia, too.

This 2D "slicing" is standard in OpenGL for handling 3D textures...

but for a NON real-time rendering one can do that .

if you can take 1 hour to render EACH frame you can do a LOT of neat and FUN things .

but to render at the screen sysc rate ??????
you NEED to use short cuts. Like the ones used in FPS games .
