Knickers! Those russian models are so nice... looks like they're made just for viewing off the web site. Shame. Love the 'Clipper'.

Perhaps we´ll get something anyway; i have managed to convert a wrml file to a 3ds file that is smaller than 500 KB. It is only the shuttle without the rocket, and the model is in a much better shape than the first.

It will be a straightforward job from here. It will take some time, but is a nice project to do If i am able to find a licence for it, or obtain permission to distribute.

If anybody here reads russian, it would be a great help, the google translator is not optimal, and i am trying to find contact or licencing info...

RVS on shatters could perhaps help...

Hmmm sounds interesting Runar... It would be great to have Buran in Celestia.

Ivvi on shatters.net managed to get in touch with the Buran model creator, and i now have permission to use his work for a Buran model / scenario, so we will get a Celestia version...

It will take time, though; there is a lot of work involved. I must optimize the model and re-map all the graphics.

Only the model is not too fun, i will have to devise a realistic scenario for it, too. Like a flight from the Earth to MIR or the ISS... Which means i must also add the Energia rocket, and perhaps even model the launch platform.

Will move this thread to the Artwork/modelling forum and continue there.

Very cool. If you got some problem with particular meshes, I'm in to help.

Thanks!
This particular model is in pretty good shape, though. I am going to try to simplify it a little and optimize the meshes, then map the graphics from the *other* model (the huge unusable one) to it. Currently, the JAS file is at 21 MB, and it looks like this: (click)

... It should come out at about 2-3 MB as a CMOD when finished, i think.

Nice!

Do you think we could grant the permission to use the clipper model (it will perhaps become reality and would be nice to use with ISS)

You could certainly ask; he (Vadim Lukashevich) seemed quite interested in Celestia, so he is very probably Ok with it. I am unsure if he reads english, though, as he did not reply to my original message, but did reply to Ivvi. Perhaps ask him to translate for you?

I am sending you a PM with my communication with the author (via Ivvi).

Runar, when you are done with the optimization, I'd like to have a look before you start mapping... Possible?

Update:
Andrea has agreed to collaborate with me on this project. We are going to recreate its only flight, in1988 as accurately as possible.

It seems i must create the energia rocket from scratch, though, as i am unable to open any of Lukashevich´s energia models.

They do not open in Cheetah3D and neither in the 30-day Amapi trial i downloaded.

I think you need some CAD soft to open them and re-export... (don't recall the format)

Runar (and ElChristou, moreover!) don't know if you already reached here, anyhow here are what I feel be the best documents in the web regarding the Energia Rocket, that allowed the only Buran space flight, on Nov 15 1988.
First general views:
http://www.buran-energia.com/energia/energia-desc.php
http://www.buran-energia.com/energia/energia-carac.php
http://www.buran-energia.com/energia/energia-consti.php
and here a very detailed one:
http://www.buran-energia.com/energia/en ... blocIA.php
http://www.buran-energia.com/energia/en ... retage.php
http://www.buran-energia.com/energia/en ... metage.php
http://www.buran.fr/energia/img/plan-grand.jpg
whose this is a VERY reduced image:

Hope this may help to create a new Energia.
Bye and a Very Happy 2008 to all Celestians!

Andrea :D
