I took a break from Apollo after my HD crash (lose all the docs from Andrea!); I've done a new Soyuz to test out a bit of mapping on a quite medres mesh. The goal was a light model but well enough detailed.

So here it is, 1,3 Mo 3DS, ~ 32k poly. The prerelease is as always in Cmod, 3 models to avoid nasty seams, textures in dds.

Download here (1,49 Mo zip)

Enjoy!

Very nice, as usual, Chris. :D
But, to avoid some Celestian to hang himself for despair, please inform them that, even if you lost all docs from me, fortunately I still have all of them, so we could find what needed to complete the Apollo 11 mission. 8)
So stay tuned, friends, Apollo 11 is live!
Bye

Andrea :D

Tx mate!
But yep, you are right, I must add that next week I'm back on Apollo!

Hey,
Thank you for the model; very nice work!
The "medres" resolution i don´t mind at all; more models should be so... And it is still great.

Tx guys!

I'm still uncertain about the use of textures; in this case it gives clearly a good + but it's really too much work in case of a highly complex model... the main problem is to keep a coherence between the "physical" details and the texture itself... I add to reduce the contrast quite a bit to gain the impression of a whole, else the texture was too present, killing the details...

And finally I like too much all the details that I think give the "density" of the model... so I'm still wondering about textures for the LEM...

What do you think?

I liked the texturing on the Soyuz, and would like to see it in the Apollo, too. It all depends on if you go for realism or technical accuracy, i suppose... But personally, i like the realism; i think the technical models, though great, are too "clean".

Keep in mind, though, that as you are releasing them as CMODs, it is difficult for the end user to add textures for himself.

Yep, but I in general it's also a question of choice because as said above, a simple copy/past of some piece of picture to do the textures is not enough, one must definitively balance texture vs geometry, else the result is messy...
I'm not sure we could gain much realism on the actual Vostok for example, even the CSM is fine IMO... Now the LEM do present some characteristic that are not possible to synthesize via geometry (in a real time frame of course)... The question is if this data is important enough to be treated... I'll do some test to see and post in the corresponding thread.

Chris, regarding many of your projects, here is a link that could be very interesting, IMO:

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/forums ... 22#M224807

The guy in the second post, mongo, says that he has a lot of docs on space flights.
Give a look.
Bye

Maybe you do... You're probably a young kid Andrea.
I'm too damned old to wait for things. My good friend
Don Goyette is no longer with us to enjoy all that has
happened with Celestia since we spoke last.

So, you see my point?

Bob, I was born on 1944, so I'm not so young as you think.
Probably we are the same age. 8)
But I never look back at the past, I'm always looking to the future.
I have received a lot of good and many more bad things in my life but, despite this, every morning when I wake up, my first thought is
"What wonderful things are waiting for me today?"
I'm not asking for applause, I'm only saying that El Christou has a lot of things to do for his job and his life, so it's both useless and unkind to try to speed-up him.
My thought, obviously.
BTW, you probably know of the long cooperation between me and Chris for Mercury, Vostok, Voyager, Apollo 11 projects, and "Something to come for 2008", but I NEVER asked him:
"Hey Chris, are you sleeping? Anything new?".
Take it easy, Bob.
Your friend

Andrea :D
