some people have been wanting a better "star" texture
and yes the 512x512 default gstar does map to a sphere without a pinch if remapped to polarstereographic

but it's 512x512 size ... well

Thanks John,

I am actually using it in test operation, since you published the texture at shatters. Intuitively, the zones of relatively intensive yellow shades seem a bit odd. We all know that visually, the yellow color of typical G2 stars should be barely noticable given the enormous brightness of the star.

Actually are your textures here and at shatters identical??

the old shatters one was NOT remapped
i got part way through making a few and noticed i made a mistake

i have 5 more B&W images i will upload
from different dates

take a look at the distances from 0 to 30
then 30 to 60 and 60 to 90 on the jpg version

-- i just updated the one on shatters


the B&W is there for anyone that wants to edit the color, feel free to .

the yellow one is only a close approx. to the default /medres/gstar.jpg

John,

many thanks for the 4k grayscale textures that are really the best for advanced actions. All it takes now is to get hold of a scientific level G2 color gradient and then to use GIMP's
colors->Map->Sample Colorize... with such a gradient, after your grayscale texture has been converted to RGB, of course. At the end, I applied a bit (0.85) of the great Wavelet Denoise... filter, to increase the texture density after the colorization process (with subcolors activated).

After a quick GIMP hack to examine the amount of visible color detail of your 4k texture, it looks like plenty of potential! Of course, things need to be done properly with a scientific-level color gradient of the sun etc.

Here is a very small colorized portion in natural resolution, using just a prefabricated GIMP gradient:

i am starting out with the float fits image
normalising it to 0 to 65536
remapping it and exporting to 8 bit for use in gimp
( fixing the poles in gimp using resysenthiser )

i can post the rather smaller remapped fits in 16 bit tiff ( 1800x900 )
i have been upscalling them in polar mapped images using resysenthiser then remapping to simple cylindrical

I like the textures; very nice!

I myself do have a question though. While I believe I can safely assume the answer is yes, I have regardless wondered though, whether during the processing of the images and textures, has the inclination of Earth's orbit to the Sun's equator been accounted or compensated for, so that the latitudinal sunspots are fairly horizontal?

Regardless, hasn't stopped me from enjoying these! I do appreciate the efforts put into these. :)

as far as i know the data from
http://solis.nso.edu/0/vsm_maps.php
is mapped to solar north/ south

but it is over time and is not visual but magnetic

but they look nice once cleaned up

and it is less work than remapping soho images
