Nice effort John. So nice in fact, I'm using it for my physics experiments: http://forum.celestialmatters.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=697&p=12607#p12607

Noob question:
I used John van Vliet's model, but the rotation axis on the model is wrong.

What parameters do you use in Celestia to get the rotation axis right?

Orientation [ 90 1 0 0 ]

is the orientation if you do not rotate x axis before converting to a cmod

x is the axis of rotation

just some pretty pictures

North is about strait up and ZERO longitude is in the lower right of the center

The DEM ( 8bit copy of the 32bit tiff) is done using SFS ( shape from shading )

a few more

Shape From Shade ( sfs)

figuring out the height from shadows

it has been a Computer Science course Problem #? for YEARS

there is still no real GREAT answer , just a bunch of things that are " good enough" for the application

such as adding a variable focus to a camera on a phone ( that already has 0.2 M to (infinity )in focus)

or for a video game

the original images were the ESA daily jpg ( yuck ) releases

i was thinking of using the NON null data points from the Shape From Shade images above for point clouds for making a 3d mesh

it got put on hold

then a WAY better mesh was created by another person
( a GREAT mesh by the way )
http://mattias.malmer.nu/2015/05/new-sh ... m-bonanza/

the ESA also has a NEW mesh

ESA just posted some Naif spice BDS shape files

ftp://psa.esac.esa.int/pub/mirror/INTERNA...-V1.0/DATA/DSK/

running into some coding errors on big meshes ( buffer overflow ) but a screenshot of
ROS_CG_M001_OMSDLAM_U_V1.BDS

Image
this is a direct convert from the BDS file to a point cloud then remeshing that pc

zip file of the "ROS_CG_M001_OMSDLAM_U_V1.remesh.obj" 3d mesh
