have been looking over things
time for starting a early "New Years Resolution"

i have a ROYAL mess of maps ,moons, things uploaded ,not uploaded, and so on

time to reorganize

so in starting - staring at the end

Looking very nice, John. Did you upload this one anywhere??

I was thinking that one could randomly associate in the celestia.Sci code a typical set of these rock shapes to little known small bodies...Of course sizes, colors and albedos should always be matched to the respective data from catalogs.

The lack of concise knowledge of the shapes would be visualized by letting the shape randomly fluctuate within certain sensible boundaries. On the one hand, this philosophy would indicate that the shapes are still badly known, yet on the other hand it would allow us to use rocky 3d templates of much higher detail resolution. The latter would also be far more pleasing to the eye, yet could display manifestly an aspect of pending shape uncertainty.

That i did not do,the mesh was 362 Meg as a obj file .

Now a lower res mesh and a normal map might do

I have been working on craters , they are starting to look "right" for a non spherical body
( as long as it is not TOO non spherical) )

a bit of a WIDE range of objects will be needed .Just look at p67 and vesta and eros, itokawa , ida, and so on

p67, no craters and jagged
vesta , lots of little craters ( except for the one that shattered it ) and smooth'ish
itokawa, rubble pile and lots of BALLS of rubble
eros, almost broken in half by one impact

Blender has a neat add on to make random VERY lo poly meshes - 12 to 24 vertex's
or random rocks - aprox 1 meg in size
a rand. poly and the same with the dem i used above merged

and 2 4k textures ( texture and normal )
15 meg total

-- i will put a zip of meshes when pluto and company are done , should be soon
then in 7 months rework it in july

i settled on a lightly cratered look of something that looks like a comet

this is a 3.7 meg cmod with 4k texture and normalmap ( the normal is still a bit TOO much .getting something that has a radii of 15 Km is guess work)
