John,

the previous land texture (several posts above) is much nicer, in my opinion. It's just the normalmap and the specular map that are in need for a fix. Can you finish this one instead ?

I edited the land color gradient to place deserts away from the equator .

for Earth like'ish planets . A quick 30 min. render will do do to the lack of any kind of information .
then one or two hours of touch up .

really anything more for something that is
well there is a 0.8 to 2.3 Earth mass at .5 to 1.5 AU's at a sol type star

being able to make a folder of different generic textures to chose from is what i am aiming at

John,

this texture is really superb !

The land masses are so "alive", I can feel lots of jungle and deserts on this planet. Pretty cool !

There's a weird rendering problem with the specular map, though, and I don't know what is the cause yet : I don't get any reflections, with OpenGL 2.0 !

With the other OpenGL rendering, the specular reflections are there. But when I switch to OGL 2.0, the specular reflections are gone (while it's working perfectly on other planets, like Earth). There's something fishy here... :/

bad normalmap

i used the wrong version ( been hacking the code) and the normal direction is tilted

here is a 4k fixed one

Yes, the specular is now working.

But sadly, we now get strong pixels on the shores. For 4k textures, this isn't right.

The wrong version of the normal map gives a better output at the shores (while not having specular).

I think the normal map is a bit too exagerated for a planet of that size.

How did you made the land texture ? What tools are you using ?

I applied a very slight gaussian blur of 0,5 to the "wrong" normal map, and the result is pretty (while not having specular reflections) :

I prefer a blurry texture than a pixelized one.

The lands are amazing !

John, definitely, you should do more work on this texture. Try to remove all the pixelized effects (especially at the shores). Reduce a bit the bump heights.
After that, you could go up to 8k ! This land texture is worth it !

4k tex,normal,and specular maps

for 8k versions the render time for the color and height textures is 3:40 hours for EACH
then the post processing for 8k that really is not much longer than 4k , maybe an extra 30 to 45 minutes

the near 4 hour render is a bit of a issue
