I haven't posted here in a while!

Some time ago I had the idea of recreating the Abell planetary nebulae in Celestia using sprite models. A number of them are very simple and can be easily done using subdivided Ico-Spheres from Blender, which is what I did for Abell 39. However, most aren't that simple, and a few are quite complex, and it's because of these ones that I don't expect to finish all the planetary nebulae any time soon (or even ever). But I have a few nice ones so far.

Here's a sprite model of Abell 7. It's quite an old, faint nebula, and is barely visible on AladinLite. I based my work from this picture by Don Goldman. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find much info about its inner structure other than a single sentence mentioning how it looks kind of bipolar. That means that my recreation, although 3D, is pretty fictional.

I am also not exactly sure about what color the nebulae should be. My recreation is not as bright or detailed as Goldman's photo, but to be fair Abell 7 is incredibly faint. If we were going with true realism then I think this nebula would be completely invisible to the naked eye, but that's no fun :DD

Thanks, John!

Over at the Celestia Forums, I learned from Selden that I was accidentally only using the first material. That was why my recreation was faint—my first material had an opacity of just 0.03. Here's another version that has more of the finer details shown in Goldman's photo:
