Hi all,

Congratulations on the new F-tex tools Fridger. I know many have been waiting anxiously for their arrival. Alas they have arrived!! :P

My question has to do with the nmtools 1.0.1. I followed all your instructions on your tutorial and it seems to work except in between generating the tiles for the srtm data I get an error message after the first set that says the following:

Code:
gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated

but it continues to generate the tiles.

As I write this it is generating the tiles, and so far 4 sets of 63 tiles have been completed, but only after the first set this error appears. I have tried it three times and each time the same result. Do you know what is happening here, or is this a non issue? I am using windows xp home edition, 2GB Ram, 256MB Ati Radeon 9550 agp, with a 3.4GHz pentium E.E

Here is the console data:

Code:
C:\large tex\nm>gzip -dc <srtm_ramp2.world.86400x43200.bin.gz | resc2pow2 86400

Ozark,

really this is the first time I hear about such an error. No idea what it might be due to. Probably, however, your generated tiles are not OK? Quite a number of people have used the nmtools 1.0.1 meanwhile without reporting ANY problems. The only possibility I see is that either the srtm_xxxx.gz file is somehow damaged from the download or something is fishy with your Windows version of gzip.

You may always use my handy "5.3k Dwarf test dataset" for trying things out quickly. Also whether you get the same error there?

It's also practical for playing with the new F-TexTools.

How about switching to my new nmtools-1.5 release?

It is about a factor 2 faster than the version you were using.

Good luck,

Bye Fridger

Hey Fridger,

You were right it was definately gzip related. I was using an older version (1.2. something) and installed a newer version (1.3.5-3 ) that seems to have resolved the issue. I have finished with the srtm data and it looks great! :D

Now on to the RGB texture and the new F-Tex tools :D :D !

BTW the updated version of the nmtools were much faster than the first version you released. When I have time I'll redo the Srtm data and Post some times. (forgot to record them as i wanted to make sure the tiles produced worked this time  )

Thank You,

Ozark

Hey Fridger,
Do you think it would be possible to code nmtools to create normalmaps from the SRTM3 files directly? Or if the tools could work with a 16 bit signed integer world map from 60n to 60s? It should be possible for me to create a 16 bit map with ISIS. It may need to be in 2 to 8 tiles though given it's size. Increasing the resolutions of the normalmap and specularmap to 128 meters would probably give some spectacular side views even if the base texture is 500 meter resolution. Just a thought.
