As to Charon in extended color, I started like JohnVV from the 4k texture that
Steve Albers has projected to rectangular form about one year ago and uploaded to the UMSF forum:
http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/inde ... t&p=227014Then I continued my way to eliminate nasty transitions between hires and lores regions. I also applied various wavelet filters etc. The result looks quite pleasing I think (despite being only 4k in size). Here is the size-reduced 2k texture

Unlike JVV I always prefer to fill regions where observations are lacking with a uniform color that represents the color-average of the (non-empty) texture. This way, one easily notices that data are missing, yet the respective transitions are rather smooth...
Finally, have a look at a "kingsize" (1920x1080) screenshot with the new Charon in the center and Pluto (=> JVV) in the background.

As a comparison, here is the official photo of Charon in extended color as of 10-1-2015 and in unnaturally bright illumination

Enjoy,

PS: If there is interest, I'll make a .zip with the 4k texture for downloading.
